E numbers in food

Every additive permitted for food use carries a code. The code says what the substance does, not how safe it is — and the two are constantly confused. Below is what each one actually is, and where it stands with the regulators.

The verdict column is a summary, not a diagnosis. It reflects the Russian technical regulation TR CU 029/2012 and the EU permitted lists as they stand. A substance banned in one jurisdiction and allowed in another appears here as banned — the stricter reading.
