Shrinkflation: the package got smaller, but the price stayed the same

A liter of milk has turned into 900 milliliters, a dozen eggs into nine, and a chocolate bar has shrunk from 100 grams to 85. The price, meanwhile, has either stayed the same or increased slightly. This tactic is called shrinkflation; it is legal, and the only protection against it is a single number on the price tag that almost no one looks at.

Why they reduce volume instead of raising the price

The reason lies in how perception works. A shopper remembers the price: "milk was a hundred, now it's a hundred and twenty"—this is a noticeable event, and it changes their choice. Almost no one remembers the volume, and the label still looks the same: the same design, the same spot on the shelf, the same familiar bottle.

Economically, it is the same thing—the price per unit of product has increased. Psychologically, these are different events, and the latter goes unnoticed.

An additional argument for the manufacturer: the packaging often remains the same size. The bottle is the same, but with thicker walls or a concave bottom; the pack is the same, but there is more air inside. Visually, nothing has changed.

What all these items have in common is that they are purchased regularly and out of habit, without comparison. Where the shopper does the math—for example, during a large household grocery run—the tactic works less effectively.

How to spot it in ten seconds

There is only one answer: price per kilogram or per liter. It is required to be listed on the price tag, usually in small print under the main price. This is the only number on the shelf that is comparable between packages of different volumes, and the only one that shrinkflation cannot hide.

There are technological justifications for this—protection from damage, space for gas in modified atmosphere packaging—but the effect on perception is the same.

  1. Calculate by kilogram, not by the pack. This is a five-second habit that completely neutralizes the tactic.
  2. Keep track of familiar masses. Pick three or four items you buy every week: milk, coffee, grains. A change is only noticeable against the background of what you remember.
  3. Compare within the shelf, not with your memory. On adjacent items, the price per kilogram differs more noticeably than the price tags suggest.
  4. Check the composition when the mass changes. Often, this is part of the same recipe overhaul.
