Weight loss after 40: what really changes and what doesn't
The common explanation—"metabolism slows down after forty"—is only partially true, and the figure behind it is smaller than expected. The main change is different and happens imperceptibly: year after year, muscle mass is lost, and with it, the portion of energy expenditure that depends on it. This leads to the feeling that "I eat the same as before, but my weight is increasing."
Myth: metabolism slows down sharply
The basal metabolic rate does decrease with age, but it happens gradually and not as dramatically as commonly believed. A more significant factor is the reduction in muscle mass, which consumes energy even at rest.
The difference between these explanations is practical. If your "metabolism has slowed down," there is nothing you can do. If you have lost muscle, you can regain some of it, along with some of the energy expenditure. A full analysis of this myth is in our article on metabolism.
Mechanism: what is actually happening
Muscle mass is being lost. This process begins in your early thirties and accelerates thereafter. It is not entirely inevitable: strength training significantly slows it down.
Daily activity is decreasing. Jobs change, cars become more common, and there is less movement outside of exercise. This often contributes more than changes in basal metabolism—see our analysis in the article on sedentary lifestyle.
Sleep is changing. It becomes shorter and of lower quality, and sleep deprivation affects appetite and food choices—the mechanism is explained in the article on sleep and weight.
Diet is drifting. More meals outside the home, more alcohol, more processed foods. Each step is small, but the sum is significant.

Plan: four things in order
- Recalculate your requirements. They have decreased along with your mass and activity level; the calculation is in the article on daily calorie needs. The figure you used at thirty no longer applies.

- Maintain a moderate pace. 0.5% of body weight per week; a deeper deficit hits muscles harder, and it takes longer to recover them at this age.
What does not work
- "Boosting metabolism." Neither frequent meals, nor spices, nor supplements work—see the analysis in the articles on frequent meals and fat burners.
- Repeating what worked at twenty-five. Strict restrictions without strength training lead to muscle loss, and after regaining weight, your body composition ends up worse than before.
- Only cardio. It consumes energy but does not give muscles a signal to be preserved.
- Expecting quick results. The rate of weight loss is slower than in youth, and this is normal, not a sign of a malfunction.
What to check with a doctor
There are conditions where weight does not respond to standard measures, and they occur more frequently at this age: thyroid dysfunction, carbohydrate metabolism disorders, and the use of medications that affect weight.
