Body recomposition: what it is and how it differs from weight loss

The term comes from competitive bodybuilding, where it meant preparing to step on stage: losing fat while maintaining muscle, and shedding water in the final days. Outside of the stage, it is used to describe regular weight loss, and along with the term, people adopt methods designed for a goal that most do not have.

What the word originally meant

In competitive preparation, there are two distinct tasks. The first is to reduce body fat to very low levels while preserving as much muscle mass as possible; this takes months. The second is to shed water and highlight muscle definition; this is done in the final days before a competition and has nothing to do with body composition.

Of this pair, the second part has entered everyday usage, specifically as a set of techniques: restricting water, eliminating salt, and "depleting" carbohydrates. The goal they were designed for is to look a certain way on one specific day. For someone who wants to reduce body fat and continue living their life, these techniques offer nothing but dehydration.

In terms of physiology, "cutting" (or "drying out") is simply weight loss: a calorie deficit plus conditions under which weight loss comes primarily from fat.

What determines whether you lose fat or muscle

Three things, and the first is more important than the others.

Rate of weight loss. A study on high-level athletes compared two rates: about 0.7% of body weight per week and about 1.4%. Total weight loss was comparable, but the slow group lost more fat, and their lean body mass increased; in the fast group, it remained unchanged. For a person weighing 80 kg, 0.7% is approximately 550 grams per week.

What you should not do during a "cut"

What a reasonable approach looks like

  1. A 10–20% deficit from your expenditure. This is calculated from your daily calorie requirement and recalculated as weight decreases.
  2. A rate of 0.5–1% of body weight per week. Lower is slow and imperceptible; higher leads to increased muscle loss.
  3. Protein at 1.4–1.6 g per kilogram. Distributed across meals, rather than eaten all at dinner.
  4. Strength training 2–4 times per week. The load is the signal that tells the muscle to be preserved.
  5. Monitor using a moving average of weight. Daily fluctuations within a kilogram are water, not results.

Where the reasonable ends

A very low body fat percentage is not a neutral state. Competitive athletes at the peak of their preparation experience a decrease in sex hormone levels, menstrual cycle disruption in women, impaired sleep and mood, and constant hunger. This state is maintained only briefly and for a specific date.

Two signs indicate that it is time to stop and see a doctor rather than tighten your regimen: the cessation of menstruation and obsessive thoughts about food, weight, and control. The former is not a sign of successful preparation, but a disorder with consequences for bone tissue.
