Why weight changes by a kilogram in a day
Fat cannot be gained overnight: a kilogram of adipose tissue is thousands of kilocalories that cannot be acquired in eight hours of sleep. Everything the scale shows from day to day is mainly water, intestinal contents, and glycogen stores. Understanding this changes not your diet, but the way you look at the number.
What makes up daily fluctuations
- Water. The main component. It is retained after salty food, intense exercise, sleep deprivation, and during the second half of the menstrual cycle.
- Glycogen. Carbohydrate stores in the muscles and liver are stored along with water: the fuller they are, the more water is retained. This explains the "minus two kilograms" at the start of a low-carb diet and the return after a regular dinner with a side dish.
- Gastrointestinal contents. What you eat and drink weighs exactly as much as it does until it leaves the body.
- Time of day. Weight is minimal in the morning after using the restroom, and 0.5–1.5 kg higher by evening — this is normal, not a setback.

A classic study on this topic: six obese individuals were observed over three ten-day periods on diets with the same caloric content (800 kcal) but different compositions.

The caloric content was the same, but the scales behaved differently because the proportion of water varied. This is exactly what happens in the first week of any low-carb regimen, and why people draw incorrect conclusions about its effectiveness.
How to weigh yourself to see the trend
- Consistent conditions. In the morning, after using the restroom, before eating or drinking, and either naked or in the same clothing.
- Regularly, not "when I feel like it." Systematic self-monitoring is associated with better results in a review of studies on self-monitoring during weight loss: the more consistently a person keeps records, the better the outcomes.
- Look at the weekly average, not individual days. Compare this week's average to last week's — this way the noise disappears, and the trend remains.
- Do not weigh yourself after a salty dinner, a flight, a heavy workout, or during the first days of your cycle. Or rather, weigh yourself, but do not draw conclusions from those numbers.
When a fluctuation is not a fluctuation
If weight increases steadily for several weeks in a row, and the weekly average is trending upward, it is no longer about water: this is an accumulated surplus, and you need to address your diet, not the scale.

What to do with the scale itself
