Allergy or intolerance: what is the difference and why it matters
Both conditions are described with the same words: "this makes me feel bad." However, their mechanisms are different, and the distinction is not merely academic. It determines whether you can eat a small amount, how dangerous a mistake is, and what to do if a reaction occurs.
Two different mechanisms
An allergy is an immune system reaction. The immune system identifies a food protein as a threat and triggers a response: release of mediators, swelling, rash, or bronchial spasms. The quantity is secondary here — even a very small dose can trigger a reaction.
Intolerance is a lack of digestive capacity. There is not enough enzyme, the substance is not broken down, and the gut microbiota takes over. The immune system is not involved, and the reaction depends on the dose: a spoonful may go unnoticed, but a glass will not.

A classic example: milk

Why the distinction matters in practice
Different cost of a mistake. With an allergy, a mistake can end in emergency care; with an intolerance, it may just mean a ruined evening.
Different strategy. An allergy requires complete avoidance and attention to cross-contamination. Intolerance requires finding a tolerable amount, and complete avoidance is often unnecessary.
Different diagnostics. Allergies are confirmed by blood tests and skin prick tests; intolerance is confirmed by observation and specific tests. Self-diagnosis via the internet does not work well in either case: it misses real allergies and leads to unjustified exclusion of entire food groups.
